Essential Vocabulary
The belief that God calls people to serve Him through their work in business, government, education, healthcare, the arts, and other professions, just as He calls others to roles such as preaching, missions, or pastoral ministry. Our work is an opportunity to serve others, create value, and participate in God's redemptive purposes for the world.
Freeing someone or something from bondage such as slavery, loss, or harm by paying a price. God saved humanity through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Because of this, people are freed from sin and death and brought back into a right relationship with God. In Colossians 1:20, Christ says he is bringing "all things" in heaven and on earth back into a right relationship with himself.
A business that seeks to serve God by creating products and services that meet real needs while doing business in ways that promote justice, human flourishing, and the restoration of people, communities, and creation.
The experience of life as God intended it to be where people, communities, and creation thrive through right relationships with God, ourselves, others, and the world around us. It reflects the biblical idea of shalom: wholeness, peace, purpose, and well-being in every area of life.
A Latin phrase meaning “Image of God.” It teaches that every person is created by God with inherent dignity, value, and purpose. Because we are made in God's image, we are called to create, cultivate, lead, and serve in ways that reflect His character and contribute to the flourishing of others.
A Hebrew word often translated as “peace,” but meaning much more. It describes life as God intended it: whole, healthy, just, and flourishing in our relationships with God, ourselves, others, and creation. In our workplaces and communities, shalom increases when people use their work to serve others, create value, promote justice, and help their communities thrive.
The responsibility to wisely manage and care for the resources, opportunities, talents, relationships, and influence that God has entrusted to us. In the marketplace, stewardship means using our work, skills, finances, and leadership in ways that honour God and benefit others.
A biblical framework for understanding the world: God created everything good (Creation), sin brought brokenness (Fall), Jesus came to redeem all things (Redemption), and God will one day restore all creation (Restoration). Through our daily work, we participate in God's ongoing work by serving others, solving problems, creating value, and helping the world reflect more of His original design.
The false division of life into “secular” and “sacred” categories, produced when biblical truth is filtered through a secular/materialistic worldview. Dualism treats some activities, like church ministry, as inherently holy and connected to God, and other activities, like business, law, politics, as merely secular: not necessarily bad, but disconnected from God’s will or purpose. The clearest example is the false separation between “Christian ministry” and “secular work.”
